Essential Materials

Double-Wall Boxes - .
This is the most important part. Though 'double-wall' boxes
are sometimes hard to find, we highly recommend them
for your fragile items at least
For your convenience, we carry some of the best boxes in town for a
surprisingly affordable price. Let us know what you need.

Strong Packing Tape - .
You want to make sure the tape you use will keep your boxes sealed. It is
also very important that the tape will handle the weight of each box.

Padding or Bubble Wrap - .
Ideally you should use plenty of bubble wrap to protect very fragile items.
However, this is where you can be a little resourceful and use pillows,
blankets, and such other unconventional items wherever it is possible.

Newspaper - .
If you subscribe to the Sunday Post you should start saving them a good
month in advance. Otherwise just ask your friends and neighbors for their
newspapers (after they are through reading them of course ;-).

General Packing Tips

Pack one room at a time, labeling each box with a brief description of its contents and which room the box belongs in. Also label boxes containing breakables with "Fragile". Keep a detailed packing list of what items are packed in each box to make unpacking easier.

Do not pack any hazardous materials listed on our prohibited items page. These items, if found undeclared, will be confiscated and discarded. If in doubt about a particular item, please call us to make sure it is ok to ship.

Wrap items individually and always place a thick layer of padding or bubble wrap on the bottom of the box for cushioning. Fill in ALL empty spaces with crushed newspaper or other cushioning material to ensure your items do not shift inside the box.

Build up in layers, with heaviest items on the bottom, medium weight next, an lightest items on top. Use plenty of padding between layers and on all sides of box.

Maintain a reasonable weight for each box. It is best to keep the individual weight under 75 lbs for small boxes and a maximum of 150 lbs for large boxes. This makes handling them a lot easier when packing and unpacking.

How to Pack Common Household Items

Books - Pack either flat or with spine touching the bottom of the box. Pack books of the same general size together. Be careful not to exceed the maximum weight your box can handle.

CDs, DVDs, and Records - Pack side by side on edge, never flat, on a thick layer of crushed newspaper or other padding. Surround items with plenty of padding and mark box 'Fragile'.

Dishes and Glassware - Whenever possible, use 'dish pack' boxes. If unavailable, heavy-duty double wall boxes are also excellent to pack these fragile items.

1. Start by wrapping each piece individually with 2-3 layers of packing paper or newspaper sheets. Start from the corners, wrapping diagonally and tucking in overlapping edges.

2. Assemble your box making sure the bottom is sealed properly using plenty of packing tape. Place at least 3 inches of cushioning material (bubble wrap, padding, blankets, towels, crushed newspaper, etc) on the bottom of the box.

3. Pack larger dishes as the bottom layer. These should already be individually wrapped. Dishes should be packed standing on edge in a tight row. Fill in all empty space with crushed newspaper, especially on all four sides between the dishes and the box walls using at least 2 inches of padding.

4. Add a thick layer of padding on top of the dishes and place individually wrapped glassware as the second layer. Always use plenty of packing materials and make sure to fill in all empty space.

5. Avoid overfilling the box. Use plenty of crushed newspaper to fill in the top layer so you are able to easily close the box lid. Finally, seal the box and properly mark it for your referrence. One last recommended step: Once box is closed, carefully move it from side to side. If you hear any movement, re-open and add more padding.

Personal Computers, Monitors, and Other Electronics - These items should ideally be packed in their original boxes and packing materials. However, if not possible, we recommend that you pack using high quality bubble wrap and the strongest boxes available. If you need our assistance or further instructions on packing these items, please give us a call.

Tools - Hand tools can be left in tool boxes making sure empty space is filled with crushed newspaper. Otherwise they can be packed in small boxes. Again, it is best not to exceed 75 lbs per box.
